Requirement for the Major
The major programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics are appropriate for students who plan to continue their training in graduate school. Combined majors—such as Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Economics and Mathematics—integrate elements of mathematics with other disciplines and are designed to prepare students for careers in business, data analysis, technology, and finance, while also providing a strong foundation for graduate study in related fields. Students who plan to obtain a teaching qualification in mathematics should plan their course of study carefully with an advisor, since courses outside the core mathematics sequence may not count toward certification.
Details about course requirements for each major can be found in the online catalogue.
Requirement for the Minor in Mathematics
Six courses are required from Mathematics, excluding MATH UN1003 (College Algebra and Analytic Geometry) and MATH UN1101/UN1102 (Calculus I & II). With prior approval from the department Chair, certain cognate courses may also count toward these six. Depending on the courses selected, students may satisfy the requirements for a minor in Applied Mathematics rather than a minor in Mathematics.
Requirements for the Minor in Mathematical Sciences:
Six courses are required from Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. At least two must be Mathematics courses (excluding MATH UN1003 College Algebra and Analytic Geometry, and MATH UN1101/UN1102 Calculus I & II), and at least three must be courses in Statistics or Computer Science.
